The Big Winner

Louise White, 81, of Newport, winner of the $336.4-million Powerball jackpot, is introduced to the media.
The winner of the third largest Powerball drawing in history came forth today. This lucky winner happened to be 81 year old Louise White of Newport, RI. Why did the winning ticket have to be sold in Newport, RI, a very rich town with some very rich mansions? Why couldn't it have been sold in a small town like Frankenstein, Missouri. Oh yeah, it's real. Well getting back to the story, the drawing took place on February 11, 2012. The ticket was sold at a Stop and Shop on Bellevue Avenue in Newport, and you'll never guess what it was bought with. White was buying a tub of Rainbow Sherbet. She opted for the lump sum of 210 million dollars. The prize will pay 14.7 million in state taxes and 52.5 million in federal taxes. I guess it just goes to show you, that you have to be in it to win it.

Controversial Cream or Delectable Delight?

Ice cream usually causes smiles and happiness, not uproar and petition. This uproar and petition comes after Ben & Jerry's came out with a new limited batch flavor, Schweddy Balls. It sure isn't the vanilla ice cream and malted milk balls that has caused this, but the name of it that has caused this. Inspired by the Saturday Night Live sketch, it was announced by the Vermont ice cream creators back in September. It was quickly turned down by OneMillionMoms.com, who said, "The vulgar new flavor has turned something as innocent as ice cream into something repulsive. Not exactly what you want a child asking for at the supermarket." Ben and Jerry's has released other controversial ice creams in the past too, like the limited edition of Chubby Hubby known as Hubby Hubby. This celebrated gay marriage in 2010 and didn't get a warm welcome. Moms have actually contacted Ben and Jerry's on the subject. It won't be available much longer, if you can find it, so try and get your hands on some Schweddy Balls Ice Cream from Ben and Jerry's.

Tornadoes and Snow: What's Next?

As tornado hit places cleaned up from the Debris today, they got word that a round of snow would be coming through parts of Indiana and Kentucky. This is where 10s of thousands were without power, after Friday's twisters. These twisters killed more than 30 people and that number is continuing to rise as people clean up more debris. In addition to the people that passed away, hundreds were injured, and destroyed hundreds of homes. In some cases these tornadoes leveled entire towns. This wild weather stretched from Illinois all the way to Alabama. It was reported that these twisters at times had winds of 150 to even 200 mph. Temperatures, in hard hit places like Henryville, Indiana, are likely to drop below 30 degrees. This is a big problem for not only people without heat, but people without a house. They are the ones who need to make alternative plans to go live in a shelter. My thoughts are with those people the next couple of days.

Tek Calls it Quits

Well if you haven't heard Jason "Tek" Varitek announced his retirement from the Boston Red Sox as of last night, March 1st. Varitek spent 15 seasons with the Sox, caught four no-hitters, played in three All-Star games, won two championship rings, and had an encounter with A-Rod pictured above. He said that the thing he will miss the most, is his teammates. As if Dustin Pedroia is the heart of the Red Sox and David Ortiz is the soul, Varitek was the steel spine that held everything together, Jon Krawczynski of the Chicago Sun Times said in an article on the subject. With Varitek retiring that leaves just David Ortiz and Kevin Youkilis from the 2004 "curse-breaking" Championship Team.

Thanks to Sports Illustrated for the picture of Varitek "making" Alex Rodriguez eat his catchers mitt.

Davy Jones Passes at 66

Davy Jones was nominated for a Tony award at age 16.

Yesterday the world lost a Monkee. People went bananas since the passing of Davy Jones. He died of a heart attack in his home in Indiantown, FL. Born in Manchester, England, on Dec. 30, 1945, Jones became a child star in his native England, including in a heralded role as "the Artful Dodger" in the play "Oliver." He earned a Tony nomination at 16 and as soon as Columbia Pictures saw him the renowned television show "The Monkees" was born. At just 5 feet 3 inches tall he was the shortest monkey of them all. The group's first single, "Last Train to Clarksville," became a No. 1 hit in 1966. It soon though came under attack when music critics came to find out that the members weren't playing the instuments, but hired someone else. After just 58 episodes the show ended in the Summer of 1968. He will be forever remembered. RIP Davy.
